Meyrick Bowker – Professional Hunter, Rancher, and Conservationist

A Legacy Rooted in the Eastern Cape

Meyrick Bowker is a professional hunter, sixth-generation rancher, and dedicated conservationist based at Thornkloof, his family’s historic ranch in Grahamstown (Makhanda), Eastern Cape, South Africa. Thornkloof has been the Bowker family’s home since 1843, representing over 180 years of stewardship and connection to the land. Meyrick proudly continues this legacy, blending authentic African hunting traditions with modern wildlife management.

From Early Hunting Roots to Licensed Professional

Licensed as a Professional Hunter since 1993 and a Dangerous Game Professional Hunter since 1996, Meyrick’s path was shaped from childhood. He grew up hunting alongside his father, Frank Bowker, one of the first professional hunters and outfitters in the Eastern Cape. Frank worked with the legendary Chappie Scott to pioneer guided hunting in the region, laying the foundations for what would become one of the most trusted names in family hunting packages South Africa.

Meyrick joined Bowker Safaris in 1993 and became the owner in 2012, continuing the family’s reputation for delivering exceptional South African family hunt dealsSouth Africa family hunt packages, and family hunting safari South Africa experiences to hunters from around the world.

Expanding Horizons – International Guiding Experience

From 1996 to 2000, Meyrick expanded his skills internationally, guiding big game hunts in MontanaWyoming, and South Dakota. These expeditions saw him successfully pursue elk, whitetail deer, mule deer, and pronghorn antelope.

His hunting experience also spans Hawai‘iGeorgia, and Texas, as well as dangerous game throughout most South African provinces, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique. This international exposure has given Meyrick exceptional insight into wildlife behaviour, terrain navigation, and conservation best practices—expertise he now shares with clients booking family hunting package Eastern Cape or family hunts Western Cape South Africa.

Conservation – A Family Tradition

Meyrick’s conservation ethic runs deep. His grandfather, Francis Bowker, played a pivotal role in saving the Bontebok from extinction. Today, Thornkloof still supports one of the largest and most genetically original Bontebok herds in South Africa, a living symbol of the Bowker family’s dedication to wildlife preservation.

In every South Africa family safari deal—whether a budget family hunting safari South Africa option or a luxury tailored adventure—Meyrick ensures that ethical hunting and habitat preservation go hand-in-hand.

Alexis Bowker – The Heart of Bowker Safaris

Originally from New Zealand, Alexis Bowker first set foot on African soil at the age of 26, where she instantly fell in love with the continent’s wild beauty. Her adventurous spirit took her across the most remote and awe-inspiring parts of Southern Africa, from Namibia’s rolling deserts, to Botswana’s Okavango DeltaZimbabwe’s game-rich landscapesMozambique’s coastline, and Tanzania’s famous plains.

Her passion for adventure even extended to the sea—earning her skipper’s ticket and working aboard yachts in Florida and the Caribbean, including two transatlantic crossings. But despite these ocean voyages, Africa’s pull proved irresistible, and Alexis returned to South Africa, the place she knew she wanted to call home.

Not long after, she met Meyrick Bowker, and together they built a life on Thornkloof, the Bowker family’s generational ranch in the Eastern Cape. This is where Alexis has lived for over 20 years—hosting hunters and families from around the world.
